This was a project in collaboration with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. For their Christmas production of The Wizard of Oz, an exhibition was held showcasing work from Birmingham City University Illustration students.

Concept

I took this opportunity to develop my film and animation skills by creating a short piece representing a few integral scenes from the story; the storm, the yellow brick road, the poppy field and the ruby slippers. I experimented with a range of techniques including film, texture creation, sound recording, drawing and stop motion. I wanted to create an ‘early film’ feel, reminiscent of the original movie starring Judy Garland.

Outcome

Halfway through the project, representatives from the theatre came for a preview of each of the students films and give feedback. They gave fairly positive feedback for mine, as they liked that I was aiming to create abstract representations of scenes from the story, and they liked the ‘early film’ feel. I was also responsible for compiling all of the film work created from the group into a showreel.
